The Kyojin II or “Huge” Spey Tenkara Fly Fishing rod is a two handed spey tenkara fly rod that’s 12′ long with a stout blank and a 6:4 Flex. The Kyojin II is perfect for when you need back bone and stopping power. This tenkara rod can is excellent for surf casting and chasing big, beefy fish. It’s a great carp or bass tenkara fly rod too. The Kyojin II is stronger and lighter than the original Kyojin but still has the same taper and extra-long spey handle, or our original Kyojin Spey Tenkara Rod. This gives you leverage to manage monsters. Carp, shark, redfish, bass, mid-sized permit, trevalley – on a fixed-line tenkara fly rod! Now this is fun. Pairs best with an 8wt-10wt fly fishing line. What an amazing rod and company. I live in AK, and have been fishing a little 3wt tenkara for the past couple of years, but have been very interested in going after salmon, which meant I’d need something with more power. After a lot of research, which included a phone call with the owner, I settled on the Zen Kyojin to target Silvers and Chum. Unfortunately, the night before I was slated to leave for a silver trip, I broke a rod section. This leads me to the repair policy — all I had to do was order the section, not send it all back like a most normal fly rod manufacturers would require. So, within days, I was back on my rod and I’m happy to say that I landed a jack King and Silver on it, fishing in very right quarters, last weekend. The silver was a tail snag, so I got as big of a fight as I was going to get with that fish, and the Kyojin handled it incredibly well. My only complaint is that this rod is so exciting to fish, you might forget to secure your phone, which I did, and resulted in me losing my phone to Montana Creek. Worth it, frankly. If you want a tenkara for big fish, and the associated adventure, I’d call the Kyojin AK-(and rookie fly fisher-) approved.

Just finished a trip of a lifetime to Bolivia for Golden Dorado. Karin was a great source of advice about the Kyogin and set up. One cast into a feed frenzy and bam! The Kyogin did the job, my first Golden Dorado on a Tenkara, on my first cast. This rod can handle big fish. When I go back I plan on fishing exclusively with the Kyogin.
