Pesca Maya is one of the Yucatan’s most popular fishing destinations and for good reason. Located 90 miles south of Cancun in the Sian Ka’an or Biosphere Reserve, the lodge is virtually surrounded by water and sits on a narrow strip of barrier beach between the Caribbean Ocean on the east, and the vast El Rio system of flats, channels and mangrove on the west. The entire area boasts some of the Caribbean’s greatest flats fishing for bonefish, excellent fishing for permit, snook, tarpon and other species like baracudda. 15 minutes south of Pesca Maya and we’re in Ascension Bay or Boca Paila, where we have 365 days of bonefishing and wind protection, unlike the Bahamas.
Pesca Maya offers up Ascencion Bay on a platter, where there are hundreds of square miles of crystal clear flats and you can sight fish for bonefish in skinny water, wading over a white sand bottom, look for permit in shallow flats just two or three feet deep, or fish from the boat in a mangrove lagoon where tarpon are rolling. You will find the consistency of bonefishing, the excitement of tarpon, the thrilling challenge of permit, and the surprise of jack crevalle, snook and the fierce strike of “cudas” on clear flats. And all of this is possible with both traditional fly rods and on tenkara. Pesca Maya Fishing Lodge is the only Tenkara Certified Fishing Lodge anywhere in Mexico. It offers up not only the “permit Mekka” of the Caribbean, is the ultimate dream of the avid saltwater angler, but also, the added thrill of doing all of this on a fixed-line Zen tenkara rod – an adrenaline rush like no other!
Pesca Maya Fishing Lodge boasts locally made fiber glass “pangas”, with Yamaha 40 HP outboard motors. These boats are well suited for both tenkara and traditional salt water fly-fishing, with spacious, clean platform that allow for movement and you to respond to your line. They are comfortable to cross Ascension Bay in, even on rough days, and with only 6 inches of water, we can get into any flat.
For the salt water experience of a lifetime, come to Pesca Maya and push your limits on the fly and be coached on landing bonefish, permit, jacks and tarpon on a fixed-line tenkara rod. This is for the adrenaline junkie who wants the ultimate fish story!
